Using gravity to encourage social interaction and community engagement

Hodi is an interactive communal gathering space designed to provide haptic cues that encourage users to engage with one another. Taking advantage of gravity, Hodi subtlety draws users to the centre of the bench. Understanding that in the public sphere, we are not as aware of the people around us, but by using a dynamic bench surface, individuals and their movements are acknowledged, drawing us closer together, one seat at a time.

Using para-cord and weaving it through the bench frame created a dynamic surface which moved every time a user sat down. Designed with a hammock in mind, where the strongest gravitational pull is in the centre, Hodi replicates this pull through a wood surface, thus drawing users towards the centre of the bench, and closer to each other.
